Raison d’être

Our Narrative

Within the vibrant heart of sub-Saharan Africa lies a pervasive challenge that silently erodes the foundation of gender equality and human dignity. Period poverty – a multifaceted crisis entangling lack of access to sanitary products, adequate hygiene facilities, comprehensive menstrual education, and the compounded vulnerabilities of girls with disabilities – casts long shadows over the futures of countless women and girls.

This is our Initiative.

For girls with disabilities, the hurdles are even higher; their needs are often overlooked, intensifying their isolation and magnifying the challenges of managing menstruation with dignity. The narrative of period poverty is also a tale of absenteeism, where the fear of stigma and the lack of support lead to missed educational opportunities, diminishing prospects for empowerment and success. The soaring prices of period products further exacerbate this crisis, turning a basic necessity into a luxury many families cannot afford. This financial strain, coupled with societal taboos, not only affects physical health but also casts a long shadow on mental well-being, contributing to anxiety, depression, and a profound sense of exclusion.

The Project Bloom Period Initiative stands as a beacon of hope amidst these challenges. We are more than just an organization; we are a movement dedicated to breaking the chains of period poverty and building a world where menstrual health is recognized as a right, not a privilege. By providing reusable sanitary products and educational workshops, we offer a sustainable solution that bridges the gap between necessity and affordability.

Our initiative goes beyond the physical aspects of menstrual health; we strive to address the psychological impact, promoting mental wellness and resilience among those we serve. We envision a future where no girl has to choose between her education and her dignity, where menstrual health is integrated into public discourse and policy with the gravity it deserves.
